How To Stay Young Well Into Your Golden Years

Oct 27th, 2011 Charles Tetsal

Just because you are approaching the time of your life that so many people start calling the "Golden Years", does not mean that you have to suddenly start acting like you are some relic from the past. When you begin to approach your senior years it does not mean you'll be propelled into senility. It does not mean that you are destined to spend the rest of your days in a nursing home either. A lot of seniors help themselves stay young by taking steps that will guarantee them a life that is filled with meaning.

To help yourself stay young longer you need to have a positive outlook on life in general. Don't turn into that person that suddenly stops living and is just sitting around for death to come knocking for them. Enjoy every moment that you have left to experience. Most importantly, you can't let society tell you how you can or cannot live just because you are getting older. Whatever you do, don't let all the negative things you see and hear about getting older get you down. Our society loves youth and tries to scare us into believing that getting older is not something any of us want to do. Unfortunately no one can run and hide from it.

Always keep your mind curious. Never stop wondering about things. Always try and learn more and don't let technology scare you off. Get a cell phone and use it, learn all you can about computers and what you can do with them. Always be willing to try something new and never tell yourself you're too old to learn something new.

Make sure that you maintain a good and healthy diet. Avoid eating fast foods all the time like you did when you were a kid. Try cooking more of your own healthy foods that contain lots of fiber are low in carbohydrates, all things that will help your immune system to fight off illnesses and diseases. Eat lots and lots of fresh fruits and veggies.

Exercise and try to make it fun. You don't have to get into some heavy duty exercise program, just do things that help you stay limber and keep away stiffness. Play golf or take up bowling. Take walks with your dog, your friends or other family members. Take up gardening and enjoy the outdoors in the comfort of your own yard.

Keep your mind exercised. Engage in games that enrich your mind. Do things that will challenge your mind and keep you from drifting into boredom. Things like chess, crossword puzzles or even Sudoku can help stimulate the mind.

Make sure to get plenty of sleep and times for relaxing. Let go of your worries and fears and learn to let your body repair itself during these down times. If you give your body the time it needs you will discover how much fresher and younger you are going to feel.

Take time out to be with the people that you love. Just because your children have grown does not mean that they still don't need you in their lives. Let them know you are there for support and advice any time they need it. Get together with friends and do things you have in common. Never be a loner during this time of your life, even if it means you have to go out and make new friends.
